Smallest DFN MOSFETs in the world!
Semiconductor manufacturer, Nexperia has announced the release of a new range of 20 V & 30 V MOSFETs (metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors) in the world's smallest DFN (dual-flat no-leads) package, the DFN0603. Nexperia already offers ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection devices in this package, but has now succeeded in bringing it to their MOSFET portfolio, a feat as yet unmatched in the industry. Next generation wearable and hearable devices are incorporating new levels of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), creating several challenges for product designers. Firstly, available board space is at a premium as functionality is added, plus heat dissipation becomes a problem as power consumption increases. Nexperia has drawn on its decades of experience as an industry leader in the production of discrete components and designed this innovative range of tiny MOSFETs to successfully overcome both concerns.
Anduril Is About To Give An AI Brain Transplant To Area-I's Drones
Defense startup Anduril has moved closer to its ambition to build a new industry giant with the acquisition of drone maker Area-I. Combining Anduril's cutting-edge AI with Area-I's proven air vehicles could breed a formidable new range of smart drones. This was the first time the Valkyrie had launched another drone. Area-I was in the headlines this week with the U.S. Air Force reporting the successful launch of one of their Altius-600 drones from an XQ-58 Valkyrie unmanned jet, hinting at plans for a future of unmanned motherships releasing fleets of drones. The Anduril acquisition is likely to take the already successful Altius to another level by opening up a new range of missions. Anduril, founded in 2017, aims to bring a fast-paced Silicon Valley approach to the defense sector, challenging the existing giants like Boeing BA, Northrop Grumman NOC and Raytheon which are geared to the traditional crawling pace of military acquisition: "We deploy in hours, not years," states their website.

IBM's new servers are aimed at AI tasks
IBM has launched a new range of Linux-based servers which have been specifically engineered for high performance in tasks related to artificial intelligence, deep learning and advanced analytics – with a central mission to increase data centre efficiency. Early tests with Tencent reveal a threefold performance increase, even at 2/3rds deployment. The perhaps inelegantly named IBM Power Systems S822LC for High Performance Computing represents a collaboration with Nvidia, with the latter's NVLink high-speed interconnect facilitating a far greater CPU/GPU throughput than is currently possible over a PCIe bus. The servers have been developed in collaboration with the OpenPower Foundation (OPF), which was set up in 2013 as an accelerator for innovation of custom data centre systems, with a particular remit for workload acceleration via GPU, FPGA or advanced I/O, as well as platform optimisation for SW appliances and advanced hardware technology exploitation. IBM conducted preliminary tests on the new OpenPOWER servers in China with Tencent and was able to run workloads three times faster than on its previous x86-based infrastructure even whilst running a third fewer total number of servers.
